A few days ago I posted a topic about how the color red tends to make people bid aggressively in an auction format. This idea comes from a psychological study by professors at Virginian Tech and UVA, both of which are near me.

So, what the hey! I whipped up about 25 listings for eBay auctions, where I “take out the trash,” in this case being some very prosaic model railroad cars. Starting price, $5.00, which includes the shipping. And I gave all the images a bright red background, exactly as the study said to do. Also some red in the listing narrative itself. Just an experiment.

NOW, as those of you are now, or have been on eBay in the past know, most bidding starts within a few hours or minutes of the END of the auction. Typically, a seller will see an item accumulate views and watchers, but no actual bids until the last day. It is rare to see anyone jump on something the moment it is listed.

But that is exactly what has happened, here. Within an hour of listing, I now have 4 bids to meet the starting price. If the study results hold true, then there should be some more bids over the days ahead. The listings themselves are pretty plain vanilla, so I am guessing that the red background has something to do with it.

Before anyone starts using red in their listings here, be aware: for fixed price or make offer, BLUE is the way to go; at least, so say that perfessers.

All my backgrounds are red here and I do just fine. But it’s fine with me if everyone else uses blue.

Congrats on your red auctions!

That’s amazing. I never thought about color of background.

Fascinating and thanks for sharing.

Along the same line:

I recently read that emails ie: bmails sent would more likely be replied to if you opened with the person’s name. I have been using it and have received many more responses even if it is jsut a "thank you. Just sold a load of stuff on Craigs list and used that hint and can only say I was pleased with my sales.

This tip I most likely read here…possibly by jsgeare. When you make an offer at a garage sale the best words to use are “I can GIVE you $?.00 for this”. Not “Would you TAKE $?.00 for this.” I always have the item in my hand when I approach the seller to assist her in picturing it gone. I’ve been pleased with my results, though I’ve always done well bargaining. It’s one of my favorite games.

Thanks JS, I was wondering why this particular batch of things was getting bid on! I have parts of a red rug showing. I just revised a couple to put more of the red rug in the picture that shows first.
I have to go buy some blue poster board for here, I guess. (Sigh)

I want you to know red WORKS. I switched the pictures in an unbid auction to show more of the rug, and now I have a bid! It was less than 1 hour later!

Who knew that the color of the background could have such subliminal power? As easystreetdeals says, the power of words is interesting too. Thanks for sharing!

According to the study, red is supposed to make people bid more aggressively, arousing their sense of competition with one another; it said nothing about bidding sooner rather than later but maybe that’s part of the deal, as well. As of now, five more items have received bids, for a total of 10 out of 35 auctions, and it hasn’t even been a day since they were listed.

Very interesting! It makes sense then that when I used to sell small rugs over there the red ones had the most activity and sold very well.

People usually wait until the last minute to bid on mine, but all of them have at LEAST 3 days to go. As an experiment I added a new picture with red for three other listings that did not have red, and had no bids. I’ll report on that later. Did they say what color blue for the fixed price? Light or dark?

That makes sense to me. When I started selling I always looked for red items of clothing. And they ALWAYS sold. Putting red in every picture is a great idea! I will remember that for future photo sessions.

Very interesting. Because the listing has to be looked at before anyone can bid or buy. Has anyone correlated the views?
Like if you have 1 with a blue background & one with a red background and the red sells. How many views did each one get? If the red also got more views I wonder why that would be.

Now this will not work as well…If everyone uses red!

I wonder if this theory will also work if I wear red? Maybe the men folk will start getting all competitive around me and there will be a flurry of “bids” for my attention! Hahaha!

I was told a LOOOONG time ago by someone that I know to be very educated in marketing and has been or is currently an actual consultant for Ebay and other big name web companies, that blue has been an industry standard long proven to be a color that promotes buying.

I guess the red would be the same as holding a red flag in front and a bull and the resulting action is “CHAAAAAAAAAAAARGE”
or in this case “BIIIIIID”

Wow, that is interesting. So you’re saying that red is good for auctions, and blue is good for a venue like here? Hmmm

Apropos of nothing really, but Walmart is changing it’s wall colors from blue to yellow. Wonder what that will do?

Yellow is also very stimulating…especially when needing to get in touch with your anger.

One of the three I changed the first photo to a new one with red DID get a bid. Now we must delete this thread and never speak of it again so there is no competition….

yippykiyea, laughed so hard almost fell out of my chair. But you always need that red dress.

Maybe that’s what explains why bull fighters always use red to get the bull to charge.

That is quite interesting that one color would make buyers bid more.

newriver, I think Walmart is always changing something or at least the ones here. Thankfully ours here hasn’t switched wall colors yet.

The yellow is kind of nice. The blue was getting dull and dingy looking.

Warm colors are supposed to make people feel happy. Blue is a calming, relaxing color. I guess they want happier customers.

Yellow I have been told is an energizing colour, so maybe making them bigger they think you need a boost in walking and shopping.

Tried the red background once. Once disastrous results. Blue seems to work better.
