Obverse: The Emblem of Guatemala depicts 2 rifles and 2 swords crossed with a wreath of laurel. In the middle a scroll of parchment with the words "Liberty 15 of September of 18321" and in the upper part the national bird - Quetzal.

Lettering: REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA. 1958 / 1961

 

Reverse: Denomination at top and a bust of Bartolome de la Casas (c. 1484-1566).

Lettering: UN CENTAVO. FRAY BARTOLOME DE LAS CASES

Translation: One centavo

Bartolome de las Casas - 16th century Spanish historican, social reformer and Dominican firar. Most of his life was spent actively fighting slavery and the colonial abuse of indigenous peoples. His efforts did result in improvement of the legal status of the natives.
