Mountains – enjoyable, fruity and caffeine-free. A discreet mandarin
note contributes to the individuality of this blend. The rugged beauty
of the Cederberg Mountains in the south-west of South Africa is home to
the rooibos, or redbush, plant – some 200 km to the north of Cape Town,
around the towns of Clanwilliam and Citrusdal. This is the only part of
the world where it grows, and so it comes as no surprise to learn that
it is the national drink of South Africa. No one knows for sure how old
the redbush is (its name in Afrikaans is "rooi" for red and "bos" for
bush), but it was first described in 1772 by the botanist Carl Thunberg
as a medicinal plant used by the Khoisan people. Unlike black or green
tea, rooibos tea contains no caffeine and few tannins, so there is no
bitterness in the flavor and no need to worry about sleepless nights. To
further refine the flavor of our rooibos we have blended it with a
little hibiscus and tangerine, an Asian variety of the better-known
mandarin. The result is a superb tea with a wonderful aroma that can be
enjoyed late in the evening.
- A rooibos should be brewed with water at a
temperature of 95–98°C (leave the water in the kettle for a short time
until it has stopped boiling).
- Sirocco aims to supply first-class organic teas and herbal infusions not only loose in our attractive colorful tins but also to offer the same enjoyment and quality in practical, convenient sachets. To make this possible, our fine sachets are made of a biodegradable material based on cornstarch (i.e. no nylon) and then hand-filled and finished. The thread needed for the seam is made of natural, unbleached cotton. As to be expected with a handmade product, the size of individual sachets may differ slightly. But for precisely this reason, each one is a tiny work of art in its own right. Needless to say, Sirocco production complies with all the standards of fair trade and the highest ethical business principles. A handcrafted Sirocco tea sachet is ideal for about 250 ml of water. Apart from the amount of water, the desired strength of all teas and infusions is most effectively influenced by the brew time. Our recommended brew time can be found on every air- and light-tight sachet as well as on the small paper tag.
