The Ping Cushin 4 Putter - 85020
This is a used, vintage (released in 1968), very collectible, CUSHIN 4 PING PUTTER. It is a "Cushin" with a "C" rather than a "K". This is one of the early Karsten Solheim designs having the slot in the putter head which gave it a kind of pinging sound, thus the name PING. This was made in Phoenix, Ariz. 85020 and patented by the Karsten MFG. Corp. It is for a right-handed golfer. It measures just a tad less than 36" ( maybe about 35 1/2" playing length ) . It is still in good condition. There are some marks and signs of use. The putter face has some minor marks but no gouges. The original steel shaft shows no wear and no rust. It connects directly to the hosel on the clubhead. The original Ping grip had been retained for authenticity and originality. This putter is ready for use, but these are usually bought by collectors.

About The Manufacturer

Engineer and inventor Karsten Solheim got his start as an engineer working for GE in Ithaca, New York. His passion for the game set him on a journey to create a better putter. At the time he thought he was simply building it for his own personal use, but in 1959, Karsten’s ongoing garage experiments yielded an innovative putter he called 1A design. This putter had very distinctive design qualities, among them, a unique tone at impact, a sound that would echo throughout the game for generations to come…“Ping.” The Anser putter began a long and proud history of truly innovative equipment design throughout Ping’s entire product line (ultimately resulting in over 400 patents) that has set Ping at the top of the list of golf design and manufacturing companies. The company is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Karsten Solheim has passed away and his son John has taken the helm.

Scottsdale Cushin and Kushin Putters

These models are similar both in name and in form. The Cushin is particularly notable as it was used by Julius Boros to win the 1967 Phoenix Open. It differs from the Kushin in the bend of its shaft and the length from heel to toe. Values for both putters range between $300 and $500.

REVIEW: "OF all the vintage Ping putters I've tried in play or practice the CUSHIN is the one that survives in both of my bags. I've played the CUSHIN for about 11 years and found an exact replacement for the 2nd bag 4 years ago, a happy day!
Day in and out this putter (34" heel-shafted bent shaft model, not the occasionally seen "gooseneck" model or the straight shafted one)is EXTREMELY consistent both short and long, and I mean 50' long! The heads are in perfect balance: off-center hits work for left to right or right to left breaking putts without feeling that "clank" that you get from other brands when you purposefully off-center the face. I use that technique to soften or strengthen holding the line, if you follow me. It works, regardless of what the Talking Head TV types tell you on TV on some of these recent Sundays! We're all different players and no one size fits all!!!
Cosmetically the old bronze heads age so well! They get this patina which takes away the glare and leaves an old and familiar tool that seems to line itself up without input....I've had to re-stripe the older one's sight line with green enamel and did the second one to match, just to have some reference. (I have an old Ping Anser which has no sight lines whatsoever and a much lighter head, making it WORTHLESS on long putts and testy on the short ones so that might end up on E BAY!)

About the Weight and Feel: I have recent experience with the Craz-ee and a beautiful bronze B60, both 35" heel-shafted and I've concluded that the CUSHIN's weight and balance is as good as those two: same basic feel with maybe a little less distance control than the CRAZ-EE, that's all.

I think that the CUSHINS are UNDER-RATED as a prime putter to put in your bag. You can find them for a range of prices on E BAY and occasionally at a garage sale or Play-It -Again Sports. So change the grip, clean the thing up and start dropping putts without thinking that you have to spend big money for a shiny new, "technologically advanced, face inserted" putter! What rubbish!!"
