The proud, powerful bald eagle was chosen as the national emblem of the United States in 1782. A symbol of strength and courage throughout history, the eagle is not easily provoked, but will fight with a fury when cornered. Bald eagles, scientists believe, mate for life. They are highly protective of their eggs and of their young.

Though they sometimes nest in trees, their favorite aerie is an inaccessible ledge on a cliff. Their nests are often expanded, year after year, to an enormous size one was found to weigh two tons, and another measured 20 feet deep. The usual clutch is two eggs, sometimes only one. The female does most of the incubating, but the male occasionally helps her for short periods. Young eagles remain in the nest for at least 11 weeks before they are able to fly.

The included certificate certifies that the proof-quality sterling silver art medal originally accompanied by this certificate is part of the Roberts Birds collection. The dies were made from an original sculpture by Gilroy Roberts, and the medals were struck in a quantity limited to one proof-quality specimen for each advance subscriber, plus one specimen for Mr. Roberts' personal collection and one for the Franklin Mint Archives.
