Has anyone heard about the possible online sales tax mandate?

I just got this in my email, and surely I will be scolded about bringing up political issues, but this could affect all of our wallets, it’s time sensitive, and I don’t know where else to put it. The numbers mentioned are for my own Wyoming [URL removed]

Dear John,

A dirty deal is in the works to combine legislation protecting you from being taxed every time you access the Internet, with legislation forcing you to pay sales taxes on everything you purchase online from out-of-state retailers.

The good news is YOU have the power to stop this deal dead in its tracks.

Let me explain . . .

Campaign for Liberty members’ continued success in blocking the National Internet Tax Mandate (Internet sales taxes) from receiving a vote in the House has made the special interests behind the mandate increasingly desperate.

So now, a bipartisan group of senators — acting on behalf of the powerful corporate interests who want to use the National Internet Tax Mandate to cripple their smaller online competitors — are plotting to ram the National Internet Tax Mandate into law by attaching it to legislation extending the Internet Access Tax Moratorium.

The Internet Access Tax Moratorium protects you from being taxed when you go online.

First passed in 1998, it has been easily renewed every year since then.

After all, what politician wants to be on record voting to tax the Internet?

But now, Big Government Senators like Republicans Mike Enzi (WY) and Lamar Alexander (TN) and Democrat Dick Durbin (IL) are trying to attach the National Internet Tax Mandate to the Internet Access Tax Moratorium.

Enzi, Durbin, and their cronies have tried and failed with this tactic before.

And with the moratorium expiring in eight days, I’m afraid they may try and take advantage of this opportunity.

Language expanding the moratorium will likely be attached to the Omnibus spending bill that Congress will vote on next week.

Internet sales tax supporters think all they have to do is threaten to delay the Omnibus spending bill or any other legislation extending the Internet Access Moratorium, then House and Senate leadership will have no choice but to give in to their demands that Congress not protect you from Internet access taxes unless they also force you to pay Internet sales taxes.

The only thing that can stop this deal is if anti-Internet sales tax Americans let the Senate know they are watching them and shout out their opposition to this deal.

That’s why it’s vital both your senators hear from you today.

Sen. John [URL removed] (202) 224-6441
Sen. Mike [URL removed] (202) 224-3424

Tell them to oppose combining the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act with any Internet sales tax legislation, like the so-called “Marketplace Fairness Act” (S. 698) or the “Remote Transactions Parity Act” (H.R. 2775).

Pro-Internet sales tax senators hope that by attaching the National Internet Tax Mandate to the Internet Access Tax Moratorium they will provide “cover” to pro-Internet sales tax and wavering politicians.

If this deal passes, those who voted for it will say they had to vote to tax your Internet purchases to ensure you did not have to pay an Internet access tax and/or to keep the government “open”.

We have come too far in our battle to keep the Internet tax free to be defeated by a sleazy deal like this!

That’s why it’s so important you contact your senators and tell them to vote NO on any Internet Access Tax Moratorium that contains any Internet sales tax legislation!

If passed, the National Internet Tax Mandate [URL removed]

>>> Raise prices on everything you buy online;

>>> Provide big-spending governors with new bailout money through the federal government imposing more taxes on their citizens;

>>> Violate the principle of “No Taxation Without Representation” by allowing state legislatures to raise taxes on individuals and businesses located out of state with little, if any, recourse against politicians who hike tax rates;

>>> Free tax collectors in one state to pursue retailers across state lines;

>>> Allow government bureaucrats from all fifty states to examine every Internet purchase you make in order to ensure you are complying with the National Internet Tax Mandate;

>>> And make it easier for government goons at the IRS to get their hands on the Internet! The National Internet Tax Mandate’s incentive to raise sales taxes nationwide will lead to an explosion of already out-of-control state budgets.

Even worse, the massive cost of complying with the National Internet Tax Mandate could drive many smaller Internet companies out of business. . . and discourage the creation of the next Amazon.

So again, please call your senators today and tell them to oppose any legislation combining the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act with any Internet sales tax legislation, like the so-called “Marketplace Fairness Act” or “Remote Transactions Parity Act”!

Make sure your senators know you will not accept the excuse that they “had to” vote for the Internet Tax Mandate to protect you from Internet Access taxes or avoid shutting down the government.

All I can say is “thumbs up”. Not sure what is going down in PA, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some have taken action already. This has been an ongoing fight for a couple years now. It will definitely have an impact on sellers like myself that can’t rely on big corporate sponsors.
