I'm looking for ideas on transporting merchandise to craft shows

Hi everyone,

Spring is here and with it comes another busy season of craft shows….Does anyone have any ideas on transporting jewelry items to the shows. My jewelry is mostly displayed in my small shop on jewelry displays. Just wondering if anyone has any nifty ideas out there to share on transporting these items. Thanks in advance!!!

When my husband and I used to sell at the local flea market we pinned all of our costume jewelry pieces on a blue denim blazer which was on a sturdy wooden coat hanger that we hung from one of the wooden beams just above our table. It was stunning to see all the pins covering the blazer and when there were about twenty or so pins left on the jacket, someone bought the entire jacket, pins and all.

For smaller more expensive items, my husband made a box using a wooden / glass inset picture frame as the top over a small box he made out of wood. Overall size was about 16 × 12 × 5. To that he attached an inexpensive hinge with a lock. The box was lined with red velvet we got from a yard goods store.

I have a small jewelry stand at the store where I work. I take rubber bands and wrap them around the hooks so the earrings can not fall off and put the stand in a pillow case. That way it’s already set up when I get to the craft show.

I’ve also used the jewelry show boxes. They’re like portable display cases. I use to have some, but they are gone now. I know where I might be able to get a few of them if you decide to go that route.

I use those large plastic storage bins. Inside the bins I have zip loc baggies with the different items I am gonna sell. Since my items are small this works out really good for me. The zip bags keep everything neat and clean.

I use cork bulletin boards covered in black velvet. I hang necklaces, and earrings from clear plastic bulletin board tacks (the kind that have 1/2 inch plastic heads on them) that way you have a small ledge to hang from. I stand these up on decorative metal easles that I get from the dollar store. You can also make these display boards out of foam core or styrofoam, just make sure to cover them in velvet so they look good.

For Rings I have a jewellers travel ring case, folds up like a brief case. I also pick up vintage jewellry boxes when I see them cause they are handy in that they usually have compartments and sometimes differet levels that fold open and you can close the whole box with everything in it for easy transport.

All this gets transported in large plastic tote bins with lids. I sort the jewellry in shoe boxes by type and the display boards can all stack flat. So when I get to the show its easy to set up. I also take a large piece of Black and Cream colored Velvet to cover the table so you can use the flat table space as display as well. Trays lined in velvet also make good display and can be stacked in your transport bin.

In a pinch I have used plastic organizing totes (the kind they use for fishing lures or for bead storage) they are good for keeping things separate but they are not so pretty for display, but I have seen a lot of sellers use them for earrings and brooches.

I moved my shop last fall and had to pack for my big costume jewelry dealer. I just left everything on the busts and stands and wrapped it with the packing saran. When she unpacked it we just cut the saran. I would think you could wrap with any number of things.

For my displays in my shop a lot of the time I jut take the craft foam and use a hole punch to make holes for the earrings, brooches, etc. If you use this method of displaying you can use t-pins to pin the foam to cork board, lean it against a small display stand or lay them flat in a jewelry display box. Easy to stack without any damage and quick and easy to set up.

I used jewelry show boxes…they are sold in supply houses. about 4to6inches deep 3x 4 foot in size with glass tops..LOCK. I’d set them up
and if they slid around just fix them up when unlocked..they prop open or
can remain closed at shows and even be chained down or together so the are impossible to remove..
they cost but were well worth it. and it saved on set up and packing up
Good Luck

Wow so many great ideas…thank you all for your ideas…it was really hard to choose a favorite but I really did LOVE the denim jacket idea! @ Wally ….I agree that it’s easier to stay here and sell on Bonanzle but I love the outdoor shows and meeting people so I will still do a few shows while the weather permits…I will not leave Bonanzle..not even for a day..this is a great place to be and I’m very grateful for all the wonderful friends I’ve met here! Thanks again!

I did arts and crafts shows for years…now only now and then. I got a suit case on wheels and several small boxes or zip locks with the jewelry sorted. They stack neatly in the suit case. The tools, tape, receipt books, office supplies, etc fit into the pockets. The table cloths sometimes can fit in the suit case also. Wal Mart has a set for about $25.00…can use both if you need to. It works for me.

I also use various displays but the jewelry does not stay well on them. I have several Earring racks and always seem to be put them up at the beginning of each show…finally just accepted that I had to redo every time! I also had jewelry display cases and that is helpful too to display some item. Mostly the free standing velvet necklace display are best for set and fold neatly to store in the suitcase…Arts and Crafts shows are a lot of work but the profits from a couple of shows can finance your business for a year!!
