Is it possible to deactivate an item without deleting it? I would like to reactivate later without starting the listing from scratch.

Yes, it [URL removed]

1. On the listing, next to the title there are 2 links Edit item and Reserve item.
Click to reserve it and You will be able to activate it later.

or 2. My Store —> Batch edit items (choose items You want to deactivate) —> Set [URL removed] —> *_Reserved_ —> *_Apply changes*

I simply put a zero quantity in that listing. Then change it back when I am ready. It gets saved as an incomplete draft until you need it.

I tried that (it does work), but then unless I only have ONE of the item, I find I have to go back and count them when reactiving the item. So, for me, the Reserve Item works best. I can reactivate without having to change quantities.
