Nearly two centuries have gone since that eventual hour when Wesley came to know Christ in his pardoning power. Shortly before his death he wrote: "I was considering how strangely the grain of mustard seed, planted about fifty years ago, has grown up. It has spread through all Great Britain and Ireland, and the Isle of Man; then to America, from the Leeward Islands, through the whole of the continent into Canada and Newfoundland. Surely Wesley would exclaim: "What wonders God has wrought." President Theodore Roosevelt said that the preaching of the early pioneer Methodist preachers was one of the chief reasons why the early pioneers were not overcome by crass materialism. When one remembers the swollen streams, the long cold rides over trackless prairies and through dense forest, the pain and suffering incident to such a life, one must realize that America today owes a tremendous debt to these spiritual trail blazers in our early life.
