Descripción del Artículo
This is an antique, iron farming tool, likely Ice Block tongs but could also have been used as hay bailing tongs, blacksmith tongs or lumber tongs. The primitive tool was found in the tool-house of a Virginia homestead that dates to the late 1700s to early 1800s. Best guess on a date for the tool would be mid to late 1800s. The plantation was once part of an early Virginia horse racing track so I would lean towards use by blacksmiths or for lifting haybales. The number "2" is embossed on the upper handle on both sides but I don't see a maker name although they very much resemble tongs made by the William T Wood Co during that time frame. The old tongs are in good shape, with some rusting. (See photos) The tong handles open freely. The primitive tool measures about 17" x 12" x 4.5".
