Pi Xiu (??) – The Auspicious Wealth Guardian
Pi Xiu (pronounced pee-shoo), also known as "Pixiu" or "Heavenly Fortune Beast", is a powerful mythological hybrid creature in Chinese culture. With the head of a dragon, body of a lion, and wings (sometimes depicted without), it is revered as a symbol of wealth, protection, and good fortune.
Key Traits Symbolism:
Mythological Origins
Believed to be the ninth son of the Dragon in folklore.
Ancient texts describe it as a fierce, wingless creature serving the God of Wealth.
Wealth Attraction
Pi Xiu is said to devour gold, silver, and treasures but never excretes them, making it a symbol of "wealth accumulation".
Often placed in homes/businesses to ward off financial loss.
Protection Powers
Guards against evil spirits, misfortune, and "sha qi" (negative energy).
Used in Feng Shui to deflect bad luck (e.g., Tian Lu and Bi Xie subtypes).
Gender Distinction
Male Pi Xiu (Tian Lu) – Attracts wealth; has two antlers.
Female Pi Xiu (Bi Xie) – Protects wealth; has one antler.
Modern Popularity
Carried as jade/jadeite amulets for luck.
Worn as bracelets or pendants (always facing outward to "seek wealth").
Cultural Note:
Pi Xiu is NEVER paired with eyes (to avoid "draining" its power) and should not be touched on the mouth (to prevent "spitting out" fortune).
Fun Fact: According to legend, Pi Xiu violated a heavenly law, so the Jade Emperor sealed its anus—explaining why it only "eats" wealth!
Xiuyan Jade (??) – The Ancient "Oriental Gem"
Overview
Xiuyan Jade (???), also known as "Xiuyu", is a traditional Chinese jade variety primarily mined in Xiuyan County, Liaoning Province. It is one of China's "Four Great Jades" (along with Hetian, Dushan, and Lantian jade) and has been cherished for over 8,000 years since the Neolithic Hongshan Culture.
Key Characteristics
Mineral Composition
Primarily serpentine jade (hydrous magnesium silicate), softer (Mohs 4.5–6) than nephrite or jadeite.
Some varieties contain tremolite, making them closer to Hetian jade in hardness.
Colors Varieties
Classic Green: Ranges from pale celadon to deep emerald (most prized).
White, Yellow, Red, and Black: Rare hues with unique appeal.
"Old Jade" (??): Yellowish-brown, often used in antique carvings.
Cultural Significance
Used in imperial ornaments, burial artifacts (e.g., Hongshan Culture’s "Jade Dragons"), and modern jewelry.
Symbolizes purity, longevity, and nobility in Confucian tradition.
Modern Uses
Sculptures Carvings: Famous for large intricate pieces (e.g., "Jade Cabbage" replicas).
Feng Shui Items: Pi Xiu, Guanyin statues, and wealth-attracting figurines.
Affordable Jewelry: Bracelets, pendants, and beads (popular for daily wear).
