Purchased directly from the artisan in 1986, this rare piece has been owned by the original owner (pictured) for nearly four decades. Katherine Siva Saubel (1920?2011) was a respected tribal elder, linguist, author, and co-founder of the Malki Museum, the first Native-run Museum on a U.S. reservation. She dedicated her life to the preservation of Cahuilla language and culture. Her work is exhibited in museums, academic texts, and oral history projects, making this handmade headdress an extraordinary cultural artifact.
