Notes: Jacket has light tattering, creasing and soiling, binding sound, book edges and end-pages are foxed, large gift inscription from Chuck, the author to one of his teachers. The Albatross, a school ship, was caught in a squall after leaving the Yucatan. The ship sank rapidly, with the skipper, Christopher Sheldon, recalling it sinking beneath his feet. Two lifeboats were launched and the survivors were rescued two days later by a freighter. The incident prompted the US Coast Guard to review stability requirements for sailing school ships, leading to the Sailing School Vessels Act of 1982. Survivors Charles Gieg and Richard Langford both published accounts of the voyage, including the events leading up to the sinking. The 1996 film "White Squall" is a fictionalized version of the tragedy.
