2nd Annual Commemorative Note Cards from the Anthracite Heritage Festival May 2008 This is the first in a series of Blank Note Cards that have been created for the Anthracite Heritage Festival Held in Shamokin, PA every Memorial Day Weekend. These 6 Drawings were chosen from a drawing contest held in early 2008. Each drawing was to depict a location that was still in the region or drawn from a photo of a lcoation that used to be in our Anthracite Region. These cards are all done in pencil/ink drawing and each card has a description of what each picture depicts along with info on the artist that drew the picture. Breaker Boy ?Breaker Boys" were used in the anthracite coal mines to separate slate rock from the coal after it had been brought out of the shaft. They often worked 14 to 16 hours a day. Drawing by Liz Jordan Liz has been studying art for 15 years with local art instructor Gloria Zielinskie and explored many different subjects and media over that time. Tragically, Liz passed away a few weeks after this drawing was chosen to be included in the 2nd edition of note cards. She will be missed. Transfiguration Of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic School ? Shamokin Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has stood proudly on North Shamokin St. in Shamokin since 1905. The parish traces its origin to 1884 making it the second oldest Ukrainian Catholic parish in the United States. The School was purchased in 1940 to be used as an all day parochial school under the direction of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. Drawing by Amanda Miller Amanda was a 9th Grade student at Our Lady Of Lourdes and an alumna of Transfiguration School. She had been studying drawing and painting for 5 years and excels at cartooning and illustration. Amanda infuses her artwork with her unique style and technical ability way beyond her years. Career Link ? Former Shamokin High School The Shamokin High School building was designed by W. H. Lee and dedicated in 1914. In 1965, Coal Township merged with Shamokin and combined classes graduated from 1966-1975. From 1980-1996, it was the Junior High School. In 1997, Northumberland County Board of Commissioners purchased the building. It is used by CareerLink, it also houses the Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities Arts Center, Gallery and Studio, it also is utilized by Luzerne County Community College. Drawing By Brandon Zalar Brandon was in the 10th grade at Shamokin Area High School. He has been drawing since he could hold a pencil and has been studying formally since the age of 6. He has his own comic strip published in the Shamokin News-Item it is called ?School of Hard Knocks?. Saints Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church ? Centralia The Church cornerstone is purportedly buried in the Church cemetery. Drawing by Lisa Welch Lisa founded Welch Art Studio in Shamokin in 2000, after relocating from Luzerne County. Lisa studied graphic design at the Art Institute of Philadelphia and has been teaching applied art and art history in regional private schools and in her own studios for over 17 years. She is fascinated with the history of the ?ghost town? Centralia and the colorful stories of the coal miners from whom she is descended. Cox?s Restaurant, Elysburg ? circa 1890 During the later years of the 1800?s, the Cox?s Restaurant Building was originally the Elysburg Hotel and then became a dorm for a girls Christian Academy that was located next to the building. In the early 1900?s, it became the three generation family owned Cox?s Restaurant. Drawing by Brittany Miller Brittany is a student at Shamokin Area High School and has been studying art with instructor Lisa Welch since 2005. She enjoys working in a wide variety of media including watercolor, pastel and colored pencil, but she especially enjoys acrylic painting, for which she has won awards. Signs Of Our Local History 1850-2000 Enjoy a eye pleasing tour of some of the signs from your childhood. Drawing by Mary Buckles Mary is a resident of Mount Carmel and has been studying art formally since 2006. She is currently enrolled in the challenging McIntyre drawing program, but also studies fine crafts such as weaving, batik and other fiber arts. She is also learning the difficult technique of encaustic. This unique collage of local signage is her tribute to the area she calls home! We hope that you enjoy these note cards.
