SPANAM, INDIAN WARS, M1878 CANTEEN NARROW LEATHER CANTEEN STRAP, COAST ARTILLERY U.S. Military M1878 Canteen with leather shoulder sling. The canvas cover is stenciled "U.S." on the front and stenciled with artillery crossed cannons centered. The number "117" is stenciled over the crossed cannons, stenciled ?COAST? below the crossed cannons, and the number ?58? stenciled on the back. The leather strap is in good condition ? full length with a small tear near one of the brass hooks (please see images), complete with both brass hooks and leather keepers. The leather is supple with no flexing some crazing to the leather surface. All stitching is intact. Some stains due to age and use. Take note of the periods after the U.S. which indicates that this was a latter production. Two steel triangle shaped rings on each side of the canteen are intact. Each end of the sling is doubled back through the loop of a two-inch long brass wire hook and a leather keeper. It is then secured by a small brass hook, pin fastened to the end that was secured through one of five holes spaced evenly near each end of the sling. The sling was then attached by the large hooks to the triangular loops of the canteen. There are no maker marks on the strap. The cork is in full form. Stopper retaining chain is intact. This pattern of canteen continued in use well into the twentieth century. Used between 1878-1902. Probably 117th Coast Artillery, 58th Company or Battery. We have shipping marked as $18.00.
