Descripción del Artículo
The Akash Yogini Newari Paubha painting, a remarkable Thangka masterpiece, stands out with its depiction of Vidyadhari, the Knowledge Holder. This original artwork is a unique treasure with its deep spiritual roots and cultural significance.
Many find the Newar Buddhist tradition captivating and mysterious due to its distinctive elements and significant cultural legacy. Akash Yogini, the goddess of wisdom and enlightenment, is one of the four principal aspects of Vajrayogini in this tradition. She is also known as Bijeshwori Devi, the Sky or space-going aspect of Vajrayogini.
The Bijeshwori temple in Kathmandu, a significant landmark en route to Swyambhu, is a testament to the area's diverse cultural heritage. It is essential because it is associated with the Indian Mahasiddha Maitripa, who practiced and realized the flying aspect of Vajrayogini. The temple's association with Maitripa and its role as a gateway to Swyambhu, a sacred site in the Newar Buddhist tradition, further underscores its cultural significance.
In a flying posture, Akash Yogini symbolizes transcendence and the eradication of delusion. Her three eyes represent her omniscience, seeing everything in the past, present, and future. She looks toward the Pure Land of the Dakinis, symbolizing her responsibility to guide her followers to achieve high states, including experiencing profound joy. This portrayal is not just a depiction but an inspiration for spiritual growth and enlightenment.
Her right hand holds a curved knife, Kartika, marked with a Vajra on top. This represents her power to cut through the continuum of delusions and obstacles of all living beings. In her left hand, she holds a skull cup filled with blood, representing her mastery of the clear light of bliss and her triumph over death. Her left shoulder carries a Khatanga inscribed with a Vajra, symbolizing her eternal union with her consort, Heruka. Her long, flowing hair cascades down her back, symbolizing her freedom from self-imposed limitations. She wears a headdress embellished with five human skulls, representing the purified aggregates of Akash Yogini. Her long necklace of fifty human skulls symbolizes her purified inner winds. She stands in the center of a blazing fire of holy wisdom, supported by a lotus representing the complete purity of her body, speech, and mind.
Overall, Akash Yogini is a captivating work of art that beckons viewers to embark on a profound spiritual journey. The intricate representations and symbols of the Newar communities vividly showcase their rich cultural and spiritual legacy, prompting deep reflection on the mysteries of the universe and the journey toward spiritual enlightenment.
