Chita is a traditional Brazilian cotton fabric characterized by simple graphic patterns, usually floral.
Chita is the Brazilian interpretation of Chintz cloth, which is a woodblock stamped fabric that originated in India in the 1600s.
Through trade, the Portuguese and Dutch introduced Chintz to other European countries, most notably France and England, where there was a high demand for Chintz. Chintz took on new artistic expressions in these countries, like it also did in Brazil.
Brazil's colonial cotton economy and domestic production of Chita, made it economical and popular. Today Chita is often associated with Brazilian national identity and can be seen at festivals and in folk art, however it's production is now limited.
