Original Brazilian Vintage Collection of 27 Abdominal Parts ex votos (milagros) from the Northeast Region
All authentic and collected by Folk Art Museum Curator during trips to Brazil
Collection includes 20 hearts and 7 breasts all in perfect condition
This is a fantastic and rare ex voto lot from northeastern Brazil. The ex votos, or milagres (Portuguese for milagros) in the predominately Afro-Brazilian area of northern Brazil are uniquely carved from wood and frequently reflect the art of West Africa.
The wooden figures, like most ex votos and milagros, are commissioned by a devotee and brought to a church as an offering for a promise fulfilled, frequently for health.
These ex votos depict abdominal parts, perhaps reflective of the owner's hearts and breasts health problems.
These beautiful and rare figures, carved from tropical wood, would be a great addition to any collection of devotional art!
