Cheng played college volleyball at the University of Southern California (USC), where she and her partner Sara Hughes led the team to two NCAA titles in 2016 and 2017. Since turning professional in 2017, Cheng has partnered with several top players, including Sara Hughes, Sarah Sponcil and Betsi Flint. She and Hughes have had a particularly successful partnership, winning multiple medals on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour and competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where they finished tied for 9th.
