Descripción del Artículo

Up for sale is a rare Roman Provincial coin minted during the reign of Severus Alexander, who ruled from 222-235 AD. This coin was struck in the city of Nicaea in the province of Bithynia and Pontus (modern-day ?znik, Turkey). It represents an intriguing blend of Roman imperial authority and local Greek culture, typical of the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Obverse: The obverse features a worn but identifiable portrait of Severus Alexander, the Roman emperor, facing right and wearing a laurel wreath. While the portrait has worn down over time, part of the inscription remains visible, with the letters "???" likely referencing ?????????? (Alexander), confirming this coin's association with the emperor. Reverse: The reverse depicts a temple with four columns and a triangular pediment, a classic representation of Nicaea?s religious or civic importance. Below the temple, the inscription "??????" (Nicaea) confirms the coin?s place of minting. Dimensions: Diameter: 2.5 cm (25 mm). Weight: 8.5 grams. Material: Bronze. Condition: The reverse is well-preserved with clear details of the temple and inscriptions, including the words "????" and "??????." The obverse shows wear, though the outline of Severus Alexander's bust and the letters "???" are still discernible. The coin exhibits a natural patina typical of ancient bronze coins. Historical Context: This coin was minted during the reign of Severus Alexander, the last emperor of the Severan dynasty. Nicaea, a prominent city in Bithynia, was an important center of culture and religion during Roman rule. Roman Provincial coins like this one were minted to celebrate both the emperor and the local identity of the cities, reflecting the harmonious relationship between Roman authority and local traditions. The inscription "????" adds an interesting touch, potentially praising the emperor or Nicaea itself. Key Highlights: Historical Significance: Issued during the reign of Severus Alexander, this coin offers a glimpse into Roman Provincial coinage from the Greek-speaking eastern provinces. Collectible: Ideal for collectors of ancient Roman coins or those with an interest in the Severan dynasty or Roman-Greek cultural intersections. This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of ancient history, reflecting both the imperial power of Severus Alexander and the local pride of the city of Nicaea. Please refer to the images for more details on the coin?s condition. The coin has not been professionally graded but is sold as-is. Buy with confidence from Tino's Treasures Hub!
