The scene features the front view of Grundtvig’s Church in Copenhagen, a gigantic interpretation of the traditional step-gabled Danish village church. It is 161 feet tall and can seat 1440 people. Grundtvig’s Church is an important and rare example of Brick Expressionist church architecture, focusing on architecture as a work of art and using distortion of form for emotional effect. The architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint merged the modern geometric forms of Brick Expressionism and early Art Deco with the classical vertical form of Gothic architecture. Due to its originality, it is one of the best known churches in the city. Construction took place mainly from 1921 to 1926, although work on the interior and adjacent buildings continued until 1940.
