Evelyn Durdin Obituary
EVELYN V. DURDIN, 91 ROCKFORD - Evelyn V. Durdin, 91, a Rockford teacher and artist whose charitable giving extended both to Illinois State University and Beth Eden United Methodist Church, Saturday, May 16, 2009. Born Dec. 13, 1917, in McIntosh, S.D., where she lived with her parents Walter and Hazel (Martin) Hanson on the family's homestead farm on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation during her early childhood. With a rural teaching certificate from Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, S.D., she taught in a one-room schoolhouse on the South Dakota plains for several years before moving to Illinois, where she earned her bachelor's degree at Illinois State University at Normal. She later established the Evelyn Hanson Durdin-Hazel Hanson Scholarship Fund, which provides assistance to financially needy Illinois State education majors. She then married Augustus C. Durdin III, a Sundstrand Corp. engineer, now deceased. In Rockford, Mrs. Durdin spent the remainder of her teaching career as an elementary art teacher. An avid cook, gardener and maker of crafts, she was a member of Hononegah Homemakers and a member of Owen Center United Methodist Church near Rockton before joining Beth Eden United Methodist Church in Rockford. She donated the proceeds of over 4,000 handmade Clowns by Evelyn to Beth Eden.
