The bridle leather belt has very faint marking for ?WATERVLIET ARSENAL? and marked with the inspector?s mark of ?C.H.? The leather is sound and supple. Adjustable. The belt is sewn and has riveted construction. The leather slide is missing. A key identifier of the M1874 belt is this cast brass rectangular buckle with a relief "US" within an oval. This was a standard buckle for enlisted men and non-commissioned officers. The reverse of buckle depicts the benchmark of ?4?. There is a small crack, lower left side where the leather belt passes thru the buckle. The U.S. Army's Model 1874 waist belt was a standard piece of equipment for both foot soldiers and mounted troops during the Indian Wars period (roughly 1866-1897). The M1874 belt, or variations of it, remained in service for a significant period, well into the 1890s and even up to the changeover to russet leather equipment around 1902.
