JELLYFISH
Medusa, also called the Gorgon, is in Greek mythology one of the three Gorgons (along with her sisters Euryale and Stheno). Daughter of Phorcys and Ceto, and therefore granddaughter of the union of the Earth (Gaïa) with the Ocean (Pontos), she is the only one of the three sisters to be mortal. She belongs to the group of primordial deities, just like her cousins, the Chimera and the Hydra of Lerna, who also had features associated with the image of the serpent and were destroyed by heroes. Even if it appears on the pediment of several temples,
she was not the object of any cult. His eyes have the power to petrify any mortal who meets his gaze. After being decapitated by Perseus, his head is handed over to Athena who fixes it on her aegis. The representation of the gorgoneion will long be used as protection against the evil eye.
"From the rapid jaws of the Gorgons pursuing Perseus rises a shrill complaint and these cries escape both from their mouths of young girls and from the horrible heads of the serpents associated with them. This shrill, inhuman cry is the one that beyond the grave make the dead hear in Hades" Vernant, 1985.
