Vintage 1940s WWII Flying Ace Herky Green Suitcase Grip Canvas Cover
About the original owner: Herschel Harper "Herky" Green was a World War II flying ace in the United States Army Air Forces. Green was the leading ace of the Fifteenth Air Force, shooting down 18 enemy aircraft and destroying 10 more on the ground. Green was born in Mayfield, Kentucky. He flew P-47 Thunderbolts and transitioned to the P-51 Mustang. He became an Ace in both the P-47 and P-51. Some of his military service awards include the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air medal with 25 oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm.
Canvas cover documents being mailed from Colonel Green's wife in Kentucky to herself and the Colonel at the U.S.A.F. Group MAP Mission to Denmark, C/O American Embassy, Copenhagen Denmark
Colonel Green served mainly in the Mediterranean theatre during WWWII but remained in active military service into the 1950s, this suitcase must date to some time between the liberation of Denmark and the 1950s
Measures about 18" x 18" x 11", plus a little additional height for the handle about 19 to 20 inches tall
Pre-owned, good condition, some age toning to the canvas cover and age appropriate wear, both zippers for the cover are missing the pull tab handles but can be carefully maneuvered up and down with the remaining base of the zippers
We store our items in a smoke free warehouse
