Viburnum trilobum (cranberrybush viburnum, American cranberrybush, high bush cranberry, or highbush cranberry) is a species of Viburnum native to northern North America, and is often treated as a variety of Viburnum opulus. It is a deciduous shrub growing to 13 ft tall. The bark is gray and rough and has a scaly texture. The stems arch and are very dense, and the twigs are a reddish-brown color. The leaves are opposite, three-lobed, 2?4 in. long and 2?4 in broad, with a rounded base and serrated margins; they are superficially similar to many maple leaves, most easily distinguished by their somewhat wrinkled surface with impressed leaf venation. The leaf buds are green. The flowers are white, produced in corymbs up to 5 in in diameter at the top of the stems; each corymb comprises a ring of outer sterile flowers with conspicuous petals, surrounding a center of small fertile flowers; the flowers are pollinated by insects. The fruit is an oblong red drupe 0.59 in, containing a single flat, white seed. Plants begin to produce fruit at approximately five years of age; when animals, including birds, eat the fruits, they deposit the seeds in another location in their droppings. Here in southern Ontario, Canada, the fruit hang on all winter. Then about the time the Baltimore Orioles arrive from down south, the bushes suddenly lose all the berries. Haven't seen the Orioles eating the fruit but I suspect they are the ones eating them. The fruit can also be made into jelly. Germination Instructions Soak seeds for 24 hours and drain. Stratification: Seed requires 90 days warm stratification followed by 90 days cold moist stratification at 3 C (37 F) to 5 C (41 F). Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Place seeds in sandwich bag(s), with a bit of damp sand or vermiculite to keep moist. Keep at room temperature for about 90 days. Occasionally lightly spray water to keep seeds and sand moist. Place the bag(s) with seeds in refrigerator for about 90 days. (these seeds were spring harvested- so have been naturally cold treated) After the required time take the seeds out of the refrigerator and sow the seeds in pots 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly. Water gently so as not to wash away the seeds. Keep soil moist but not wet.
