Descripción del Artículo
Faience plate, a type of tin-glazed earthenware popular in France.
Faience originated in France in the 16th century and became popular among the elite in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The term "faience" comes from Faenza, an Italian city known for maiolica production.
Faience is characterized by its milky, opaque white color, achieved by adding tin oxide to the glaze.
Plate measures about 9-1/4".
Helpful information:
Origin: Possibly from the Waly Manufacture in Argonne, France.
Era: Likely dates back to the Restoration Era, ca. the late 1700s.
Design: Features a crowned fleur-de-lys, framed by laurel leaves.
Material: Polychrome earthenware faience.
Style: The scalloped edges add a touch of vintage charm.
The plate features a fleur-de-lis and a crown, often associated with French royalty.
These plates were initially luxury items but became more common in middle-class homes by the mid-1700s.
French faience is divided into "grand feu" (high fire) and "petit feu" (low fire) based on firing techniques, the Musee de Rheims in France has a similar plate in their collection and they identify it as high fire.
Pre-owned, good condition no cracks or chips, glaze skip on back rim.
