Product description: Traditional crafts of the Indians will continue to be produced as long as the Indian cultures themselves exist. As these cultures change, so will their arts and crafts change. It is not possible, in this day, for the Indian to return to a hunting economy; neither is it practical to revive the related craft of chipping arrowpoints. True arts and crafts should reflect their culture. Recognizing that the future of Indian art cannot be found by looking backward, the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe is leading the way in the search for new directions. Here young Indian craftsmen learn the use of new materials and how to adapt them to their rich cultural heritage. Although it is always customary to lament the passing of the old, the work of these new students indicates that the artistic future of the Indian can be as rich as his past. This booklet is intended to serve the casual visitor to the Southwest as in introduction to the better-known Indian crafts and to provide an understanding of the contributions of the Southwest Indian to the field of arts and crafts.
