Descripción del Artículo
WWI, U.S. ARMY, ENLISTED, CAP BADGE, SCREW BACK, VINTAGE
This is an example of the bronze enlisted men?s cap badge that replaced the unit type and number insignia. This is die stamped from bronze metal and utilized a screw post and thumb nut as the attachment mechanism. A mirror image of the Great Seal stamped on the obverse can be seen on the reverse. To keep the badge from spinning on the cap, a spike washer is placed over the screw post and soldered in place. The screw post is slightly bent. The thumb nut does screw all the way on and off. Nice war time example.
Until the end of WWI, enlisted men?s regiment or staff duty determined the insignia worn on his cap. If he was in the infantry, cavalry or artillery, the unit number and letter was also included on the insignia. With the expansion of the Army in 1917, supplying the regimental and company sized units with insignia that contained their individual numbers and letters became too cumbersome. To alleviate the problem, the Army directed the use of a one and one half inch bronze color disk die stamped with the national eagle and worn on the cap. This eliminated the logistical nightmare faced by the U.S. Quartermaster service.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 37.2mm
Thickness: 2mm
