When the first edition of this book appeared, in 1952, the theory of relativity was generally regarded as an essentially finished subject that did not offer any interesting problems for the active research worker. New experimental devices have put the theory on a firmer experimental basis, and large numbers of theoretical investigations have clarified the theory itself, so that the physical content of general relativity is now much better understood.
