David Sharir BORN: 1938 in Tel Aviv, Israel RESIDES: Tel Aviv, Israel David Sharir, the son of Russian immigrants, was born in Israel. After studying art in Tel Aviv, Sharir went on to study architecture and theater design in Florence and Rome. The brightly-colored costumes and intricate stage designs he created for these productions have profoundly influenced his art. When Sharir moved to Jaffa in 1966, his hallmark style was truly developed. Studio, family, and spiritual devotion all serve as inspiration for the imagery in his work. His evolving style combines personal experience, Biblical symbolism, and fantasy. Sharir has been with the Gallery since it was founded. Jacob's Dream" is a notable work by Israeli artist David Sharir, depicting Jacob's biblical dream of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending. Sharir's rendition, often a lithograph or serigraph, is a popular piece of modern Judaica. The artwork is inspired by Genesis 28:10-17, where Jacob experiences a vision of God and the promise of land and descendants according to Bible Gateway. Key aspects of Sharir's "Jacob's Dream": Subject: The artwork portrays Jacob asleep, with a ladder or stairway extending upwards towards a divine presence, often with angels depicted in motion. Artistic Style: Sharir's style is characterized by vibrant colors, geometric shapes, and a modern, sometimes whimsical, interpretation of biblical themes, according to JewishBoston. Symbolism: The ladder, or Jacob's ladder, is a powerful symbol of connection between the earthly and divine realms, representing hope, aspiration, and the covenant between God and Jacob. Biblical Context: The artwork is rooted in the biblical narrative of Genesis 28, where Jacob, fleeing his brother Esau, has a dream that includes the promise of God's presence and protection.
