It is constructed above-ground (to protect the permafrost, and high enough for migrating animals to pass underneath), and below ground where safe. The zig-zag pattern of the pipeline is by design. This keeps the pipeline from separating during expansion contraction, an innovative design thanks to James Maple, Structural Engineer. The pipeline received honors from the American Welding Society for the superior work.
