Descripción del Artículo

This is a truly unique hand-painted Tibetan Thangka Painting of a Citipati or Dancing Skeleton, a large-sized original artwork. The Citipati, known as the "Lord and Lady of the Charnel Grounds," are the primary Dharma protectors associated with the Vajrayogini tantric systems. The figures hold a rich history rooted in the meditation practices of Indian Mahasiddhas on charnel grounds. These practices were closely linked to the Heruka Chakrasamvara/Yogini transmission lineage, which was performed in areas covered with human remains where corpses were either cremated or left to be consumed by wild animals like vultures. This was a stark but poignant symbol of impermanence. Despite the macabre context, these cheerful-looking skeletons hold cultural significance beyond their initial eerie appearance. They are often depicted in the Cham Lama dances, vibrant and lively events conducted during specific Buddhist festivals by monasteries. These dances feature elaborately costumed and masked monks, accompanied by traditional Tibetan musical instruments, providing a visually stunning and culturally rich spectacle. Citipati's representation transcends the foreboding nature of the charnel grounds, signifying a deeper contemplation on the impermanence of existence. This depiction serves as a unique and profound reminder of the Buddhist principle of impermanence, offering a rare window into the profound spiritual practices and cultural celebrations, making it a fascinating addition for enthusiasts and collectors alike. The Oil Varnished Thangka Painting process is a meticulous art form that involves several detailed steps to create stunning and vibrant works of art. This technique applies thin layers of oil, which enhance the painting's longevity and protect it from moisture and damage.
