Descripción del Artículo

Vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the classic 1940's invention-themed dramatic biopic, EDISON, THE MAN, released in1940 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and directed by Clarence Brown, in which 82 year old inventor and entrepreneur Thomas Alva Edison (Spencer Tracy) is honored in 1929 and he reflects back on his sixty year career of scientific achievement. The cast includes Rita Johnson, Lynne Overman, Charles Coburn, Gene Lockhart, Henry Travers, Felix Bressart, and Peter Godfrey. The image features a shot inside the West Orange, New Jersey scientific laboratory of inventor Thomas Alva Edison (Spencer Tracy) as he sits in a chair while talking to Ben Els (Henry Travers), as others including actor Felix Bressart (directly behind Tracy) listen to their conversation. It is in fine condition with a small tear with signs of wear around it in the top half of the left border; light signs of wear on the tip of each corner; and random signs of light wear on the edge of the top border. The image quality is razor-sharp with very fine detail and nice contrast. This is an interesting shot in terms of the period scientific equipment used to decorate this set. This movie was made only 9 years after the real Thomas A. Edison died. It was one of the films that Spencer Tracy really believed in and actively supported, not because he starred in it, but because he was a great admirer of Thomas A. Edison. This was unusual, as Tracy was known throughout most of his career to disparage his own gifts as well as the importance of motion pictures. Also, prior to this film, Tracy had been a very active member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He even hosted the awards show on at least one occasion. However, when the nominations came out for the best films of 1940, Tracy was appalled that Edison, the Man was so overlooked in the nominations (it was only nominated for "Best Writing"). Tracy swore he would never attend another Academy Award ceremony again and he never did. Not without irony is that although he was nominated another 6 times over the next 28 years, Tracy never won another Oscar after that, after winning two in a row in the previous two years.
