Descripción del Artículo
Vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby card from the popular 1920's silent film drama/comedy, THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES, released in 1928 by United Artists and directed by D.W. Griffith. Gum-chewing frizzy-haired gold-digger Marie Skinner (Phyllis Haver) cooks-up
a scheme with her lover, Babe Winsor (Don Alvarado), a jazz hound, to fleece a portly,
middle-aged real estate tycoon, William Judson (Jean Hersholt). Marie moves into Judson's
apartment building and contrives to meet and seduce him, plying him with compliments,
music, swoons, décolletage, and batted eyes. When his loyal wife (Belle Bennett) and their two
children(William Bakewell, Sally O'Neil) see him out catting with Marie at a night club, mom's devastated and
confronts him. He moves out. Babe wants Marie to sell Judson worthless bonds.
Will mom commit suicide? Will sis shoot the floozy? Will pops figure out he's
being a fool?
The image depicts one of the film's more dramatic moments as The Mother (Belle Bennett) has learned of her husband's infidelities with a beautiful young gold-digger as her daughter (Sally O'Neil) tries to comfort her. Both women are shown wearing elegant negligees as they sit on the Mother's bed. The Art Deco-influenced lettering of Griffith's name and the film's title is complemented by blue, black, and orange boxes outlining the color-tinted scene. It is unrestored and in very fine condition with a tiny 0.25 in. vertical crease near the bottom left corner, a light 1 in. diagonal crease on the top border to the right of center and a small area of wear along the top edge on the right side of the card. This example is in superb original condition with bright colors and perfect registration.
