Dwarf Tomato Seeds- Caitydid, Heirloom, Sweet Bicolor, Determinate 80 Days
Caitydid Tomato Seeds ? Dwarf Bicolor Variety, Sweet Flavor, 80 Days to Harvest
Caitydid is a visually stunning dwarf tomato variety developed through the Dwarf Tomato Project. Its goal was to develop compact, flavorful tomato plants that thrive in small spaces?perfect for balcony growers, urban gardeners, and anyone short on room but big on taste. It originated from a cross between 'New Big Dwarf' and 'Mortgage Lifter' (Pesta strain), created by Patrina Nuske Small in 2007 and nicknamed "Pesty." The final selection and naming were done by Craig LeHoullier in 2011, in honor of his daughter Caitlin. It was officially released in 2016 and is part of the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI), ensuring its availability for home gardeners and breeders.
This is an open-pollinated heirloom-type tomato, not a hybrid. It matures in approximately 80 days, making it a mid-season producer.
Fruit color is a vibrant blend of yellow, pink, and orange with red swirls and marbling. The tomatoes are oblate and slightly ribbed, measuring about 3 to 4 inches across. They are not considered cherry tomatoes. Fruit weight ranges from 6 to 8 ounces, with some reaching up to 9 ounces.
Flavor is well-balanced, sweet, and juicy with a meaty texture. It?s excellent for fresh eating, slicing, and salads. While not ideal for heavy-duty canning, it performs well in light sauces and raw dishes.
Plant style is dwarf and indeterminate, with rugose (crinkled) foliage and regular leaf form. It grows to a compact height of about 3 to 3.5 feet, making it ideal for containers, patios, or small garden beds.
Caitydid combines ornamental beauty, delicious flavor, and practical size?perfect for gardeners seeking a unique and reliable tomato variety.
**How to Start from Seed:**
1. **Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost.** Sow seeds OE inch deep in seed starting mix.
2. **Maintain a temperature of 70-75F** for optimal germination. Use a heat mat if needed.
3. **Keep the soil consistently moist** but not waterlogged.
4. **Provide ample light.** Use grow lights or a sunny window.
5. **Harden off seedlings** by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a week before transplanting.
**Growing Tips:**
* **Choose a sunny location** with well-drained soil.
* **Provide support** for the indeterminate vines using stakes, cages, or trellises.
* **Water regularly,** especially during dry spells.
* **Fertilize with a balanced tomato fertilizer** according to package directions.
* **Pinch off suckers** (the small shoots that grow between the main stem and branches) to improve airflow and encourage fruit production. This is important with indeterminate varieties like Opalka.
* **Harvest tomatoes when they are fully ripe** and deep red.
