Ancient Roman Coinage of Divus Constantine I
Divus Constantine I
The Great
First Image of the Christian God on a Roman coin.
This remarkable coin depicts Constantine the Great being flown up to heaven in a chariot pulled by four horses (Quadriga)
with right hand of God coming down from heaven to receive Constantine.
This is significant in that it represents the first depiction of the
Christian God on a Roman (or any) coin.
Æ4 (bronze) -- reduced centenionalis 2.02g. 14mm. Small Coin (a U.S. dime is 17.9mm).
Died 337 AD. Struck September 9, 337-Spring 340 AD. Antioch(?) mint.
Obverse: D N CONSTANTI-NVS P T AVGG. Translation: Divus Constantinus Pater Augustorum (Divine Constantine Father of the Augusti) veiled head of Constantine right.
Reverse: Constantine in quadriga (four horse chariot) right, Manus Dei (hand of God) above beckoning the extended hand of Constantine. mint mark in exergue SMA(?) appears to be Antioch.
Choice Very Fine--Attractive dark green patina. Small coin shown greatly enlarged thus much nicer in hand!
Ref. cf. RIC VIII Antioch(?) 12.
RIC
(Roman Imperial Coinage) is the general abbreviation for the set of 13
volumes of identification catalogs of Roman coins. RIC is the world
standard scholarly reference.
