Descripción del Artículo

First settled by the English in 1664, Elizabeth, New Jersey, has a rich history and enduring legacy since its earliest days. The town was the initial capital of New Jersey and played a pivotal role during the American Revolution. The city was continually attacked by British forces located in Manhattan and Staten Island, though the decisive Battle of Springfield forced a British retreat and maintained New Jersey’s independence. Following the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, George Washington embarked for his inauguration from Elizabeth, and the town is home to numerous memorials and monuments dedicated to the fight for independence. The Elizabeth River, which runs through the city, helped spur early economic growth for milling and manufacturing. By the time of this map’s publication, it had grown along with neighboring Newark. The City has a variety of distinct neighborhoods established over the course of decades of immigration from Great Britain, Eastern, and Western Europe based along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. The city was officially created in 1855, annexing Elizabeth Borough and Elizabeth Township. Panoramic maps were created to entice residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic buildings, religious and educational institutions, and other economic opportunities. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history with a distinctive aesthetic and classic style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. By the turn of the century, Elizabeth had become one of the most iconic cities in New Jersey. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
