Descripción del Artículo

Vintage campaign fundraising letter from U.S. Senate candidate Hayes E. Gahagan of Maine. Dated August 2, 1978. Includes signed letter and mailing envelope. Letter measures approximately 8.5 x 11. Legal size envelope. Condition: This is an original campaign fundraising letter, not a copy or reproduction. It is in very good condition. Comments: The 1978 United States Senate election in Maine was held on November 7, 1978. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator William Hathaway ran for re-election to a second term, but was defeated by William Cohen, the Republican U.S. Representative from Maine's 2nd congressional district. Meanwhile, young former state senator Hayes Gahagan launched an independent campaign, running well to the right of Cohen. Gahagan received 7.4% of the statewide vote.
