UP FOR SALE: Holiday Magazine April 1961 (Vol. 29 No. 4) San Francisco Holiday, Vol. 29, No. 4 is image-rich front to back. Its cover is a pastiche by David Stone Martin of "painted lady" Victorians, cable cars, Coit Tower, Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge. Inside are paintings by Asian American painter Dong Kingman and a biting pen-and-ink send-up of San Francisco society by caricaturist Ronald Searle titled "Morbid Anatomy of the San Francisco Society Lady." Its majestic 10.75 x 13.75 inch size, 222-page heft and lustrous paper bespeak an appetite for affluence catered to by opulent, full-page, full-color advertisements. These half-century-old ads pitch such icons of the good life as Heritage Furniture, the Lincoln Continental, RCA Victor color televisions, Evinrude outboards and Autumn Haze mink coats. Tellingly, Holiday's inaugural issue began introducing Americans to the glamorous world of luxe travel in March 1946, Year 1 of America's postwar hegemony. First edition. Good magazine with light shelf wear signs of handling, a couple of cracks to the spine, some fraying at the bottom and top of spine. Overall, a nice copy. Edited by Ted Patrick, color and B W illustrations throughout.
