The mala is loosly strung so that the thumb can go inside while doing prayers/ chanting. You can see the thread of the mala. To experience the full benefits of Rudraksha, the beads should touch each other in a mala. This has to do with the energy movement in the mala. It is important not to thread the mala too tightly or else the beads may crack. Gently and loosly strung, with all the beads touching, is ideal.
