Max and Martha were real twin children of a famous early Texas artist Hermann Lungkwitz, who is one of the characters in the book. The author's story is based on some of the drawings of Max and Martha's uncle, Richard Petri, the brother-in-law of Lungkwitz. The book is complete and in FINE condition with some overall light wear. On the front free endpaper the author has inscribed, "To Arlene and Joe, Alles Gute! Marjorie von Rosenberg, Sept. 12, 1987".
