We are glad to introduce a new contributor, Ignace Strasfogel, a young Polish-born conductor who has been helping prepare the Alcestis production. Educated in Berlin, where he won the Men- delssohn State prize for composition and served as assistant con- ductor in the State Opera, Mr. Strasfogel came to the United States in 1933, has accompanied Szigeti, Melchior and Lehmann, and conducted the Philharmonic and New Friends of Music Orchestras. Investigating the glorious statistics of Kirsten Flagstad's Metro- politan Opera career, we are glad to learn that the great soprano's final Alcestis on April 1 may not be her last appearance on the operatic stage. A farewell performance -- perhaps of Dido -- is being discussed for London. The Alcestis production photographs on pages 18 and 19 were taken at the 1941 performance of the work, when Marjorie Lawrence, Rene Maison and Leonard Warren took the leading roles. The scenery remains the same in 1952. Issued weekly during the Opera Season and fortnightly in the Spring and Fall by THE METROPOLITAN OPERA GUILD 654 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK, N. Y.
