May contain traces of peanuts, sesame, and hazelnuts.
This gluten-free product is suitable for celiacs.
Maria Simona’s Alicante Turrón carries a designation of origin and is protected by the Jijona Regulatory Council, ensuring its authenticity and quality.
The History of Alicante Turrón
While the close association between the city of Alicante and this delicious treat is well-known, the exact origins of the "original" turrón remain unclear. Almonds and honey were already common foods in ancient Greece and Rome, providing energy to Olympic athletes. Spanish nougat also shares similarities with Arabic baklava. Although it is widely accepted that the recipe originated in Arab countries, there is no concrete evidence to support this theory.
What is certain is that turrón holds significant cultural importance for the region of Alicante:
As early as 1582, turrón was an essential part of Christmas celebrations in Alicante, with a municipal document from that time noting that workers were paid in Spanish nougat during the holiday season.
In the 1570 play La Generosa Paliza by Lope de Rueda, the plot revolves around "turrón de Alicante."
By 1595, nougat had become so beloved in the city that King Philip II had to issue a letter asking the people of Alicante to limit their spending on turrón and fig bread during the holidays.
Although Alicante eventually ceased producing Spanish nougat due to a commercial dispute, the city's name remains an enduring reference, forever linked to the hard variety of this iconic treat.
