The J. H. C. K. Eagle Silk Mill Clock Tower
John C. Brown, a principal stockholder of the J. H. C. K. Eagle Silk Mill
which was erected in 1916 had a 4-faced Clock Tower placed on the roof
of the mill. The clock tower became the most famous landmark in Shamokin.
After the mill was razed in 1995, the Clock Tower sat on the lot for years.
After all efforts to find funding for repairs and a new home failed, the
4-faced green patina-coated copper was stripped and recycled to
manufacture mirror frames by ?Olde Good Things of N.Y. City?.
Drawing By Amanda Miller, 14, Amanda has been interested
in Art since she could hold a pencil.
She is a student at Transfiguration of Our Lord
Ukrainian Catholic School in Shamokin.

Capital Theatre Tharp?s Ice Cream
The Capitol Theatre was built in 1901 and originally named ?The Fraternity Theatre? which was located on the second floor and featured Stage Shows and Vaudeville Acts. The ground floor was used as a storeroom for Moser?s Department Store. The name of the theatre was changed to ?The Family Theatre? in 1908 and motion pictures were added to the venue. Casper Tharp and his son Chester purchased the building in 1925; moved the theatre to the ground floor and renamed it ?The Capitol Theatre?. The Tharp family also opened the Tharp?s Ice Cream Parlor next to the Theatre. The theatre was closed in 1967 and later razed. The Tharp?s Ice Cream Parlor still stands and became a restaurant that still serves the Shamokin community.
These two wonderful, entertaining places were painted by
Gloria Zielinskie
And can be enjoyed by all as they bring back memories.
