Descripción del Artículo

SPANAM, INDIAN WARS, U.S. ARMY, CAVALRY, NO. 1, M1874 SHOEMAKER CURB BIT Designed by Capt. William R. Shoemaker, February 1874. In April 1874, Capt. Shoemakers pattern of curb bit was selected by the Board over several other submissions from well-established and individual inventors. Shoemaker?s goal was to develop a horse bit for cavalry mounts that was ?lighter and more humane? than the models that were already in use. Two branches, with curve at the top for cheek-strap billet; slot in the branch for curb-strap; eye at the lower end of branch, into which is welded the ring for the rein one mouth piece, securely riveted to the branches; one cross bar, securely riveted to the branches near the lower end; two ornaments of cast brass rosettes, with raised letters ?US? and riveted to the branches. Both original ?US? bosses are present and intact. This is a No. 1, indicated by the oe? high arch in the mouthpiece. All the components of this bit are present and in original form, to include the lower lip bar and both rein rings. In good overall complete condition, this iron artifact has a surface that has darkened and discolored with age and storage. Displays evidence of issue, use and age.
