The USS Guardfish (SS-217) was a Gato-class submarine of the U.S. Navy that earned distinction for its aggressive and successful service during World War II. Commissioned in May 1942, Guardfish quickly made a name for itself during its first war patrol by sinking several Japanese ships off the coast of Japan?a feat that earned the sub a Presidential Unit Citation. Over the course of nine war patrols, Guardfish sank over a dozen enemy vessels, totaling more than 70,000 tons, playing a vital role in the U.S. submarine campaign to cut off Japan?s supply lines. The submarine combined stealth, skilled crew, and cutting-edge technology of the time to become one of the more celebrated submarines of the war. She was decommissioned in 1946 and eventually sold for scrap in 1959.
The Electric Boat Company, founded in 1899 by Isaac Rice, is a pioneering American shipbuilding firm best known for its role in developing submarines for the United States Navy. Originally partnering with inventor John Philip Holland, the company built the Navy?s first commissioned submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1). Based in Groton, Connecticut, Electric Boat played a critical role in advancing submarine technology throughout the 20th century, from early diesel-powered designs to modern nuclear-powered vessels. Now a division of General Dynamics, it continues to be a leading builder of submarines, including the current Virginia-class and upcoming Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.
