Descripción del Artículo

This is a Sub Envelope w/ Black White Photo from the Electric Boat Company. It features the US Submarine Gunnel. Please see my photos for a better idea of the state of the item. Please let me know if you have any questions or want more pictures! The USS Gunnel (SS-253) was a Gato-class submarine commissioned in August 1942 that served with distinction during World War II. Operating primarily in the Pacific, Gunnel completed eight war patrols, during which she sank several Japanese ships and conducted special missions, including reconnaissance and lifeguard duties. Notably, during her first war patrol, Gunnel endured a tense and harrowing episode when she was nearly bombed by friendly aircraft during her return from landing intelligence agents in North Africa, a rare instance of a submarine operating in the Atlantic theater. She later shifted to the Pacific, where she carried out more traditional submarine operations against enemy shipping. After the war, Gunnel was decommissioned in 1946 and ultimately scrapped in 1959. The Electric Boat Company, founded in 1899 by Isaac Rice, is a pioneering American shipbuilding firm best known for its role in developing submarines for the United States Navy. Originally partnering with inventor John Philip Holland, the company built the Navy?s first commissioned submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1). Based in Groton, Connecticut, Electric Boat played a critical role in advancing submarine technology throughout the 20th century, from early diesel-powered designs to modern nuclear-powered vessels. Now a division of General Dynamics, it continues to be a leading builder of submarines, including the current Virginia-class and upcoming Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.
