The series was about the Wilson family, an African-American family struggling between working- and middle-class in San Francisco. The show was heralded as being a realistic portrayal of an African-American family. It was funded in part by the U.S. Office of Education and was so popular that executive producer Avon Kirkland was approached many times about syndicating the show.
