Descripción del Artículo

One other known example exists in the British Museum. A commemorative christian assyrian silver medal issued in 1997 in Syria to mark the 1700th anniversary (297 AD?1997 AD) of the martyrdom of two early Christian soldier?saints (commonly recognized in the Middle East as Saints Sergius and Bacchus). Composition: Silver Weight: 18 g Diameter: 35 mm Obverse (front): Central design: Two haloed horsemen bearing spears, rendered in a stylized Eastern Christian iconographic style. Reverse (back): Central design: A depiction of a church building with a cross on top, shown from a slightly angled perspective. Inscription: More Arabic text encircles the image. Overall, the medal combines traditional Christian iconography (the haloed soldier?saints on horseback) with Arabic inscriptions marking both the 1700-year anniversary of their martyrdom (297 AD?1997 AD) The style and script strongly suggest it was created for Middle Eastern Christian communities honoring the legacy of Saints Sergius and Bacchus.
